It seems robots are keen on getting into the delivery game, with recent news of robo-deliverers storming college campuses, transporting food and drinks to students. Now Amazon has Scout under its employment, a fully electric, autonomous package delivery system.
Scout recently started its career at Amazon in a neighborhood in Snohomish County, Wash. The shopping process stays the same, with customers in the area ordering items like usual. However, their packages will be delivered either by a trusted carrier or by Amazon Scout.
Six robots in total will be making their rounds throughout the neighborhood, working Monday through Friday during the day. Although they’ll drive along their routes without assistance, an Amazon employee will chaperon the robots at first.
The robots’ autonomous navigation skills were developed at Amazon’s R&D lab in Seattle.
“We are delighted to welcome Amazon Scout into our community. Similar to Amazon, we are always looking for new ways to better deliver service to our residents. From the latest Amazon innovation to cutting edge technology, Snohomish County is a great place for entrepreneurial creativity,” Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers says.
