Lockheed Martin, the Drone Racing League and NVIDIA want to give people a chance to showcase their innovative ideas for an AI technology that could enable autonomous drones to race against unmanned aerial vehicles piloted by humans.

The innovative challenge, called AlphaPilot, is a means to continue advancing technology, specifically in AI and drones which are used in industrial, military and personal applications.

The challenge opens later this year and will continue into 2019 where humane drone pilots will go against contestant entries. Lockheed said they are looking for AI programs “that can navigate a fully autonomous drone through complex, multi-dimensional racing courses — without any pre-programming or human intervention.” The first team whose drone beats a human takes home $250,000, but the grand prize winners go home with one million.
