Global Energy Transmission (GET) has created a mid-air recharging system that can charge several drones at once without requiring them to touch the ground, according to New Atlas.
The GET system consists of a hexagonal frame of wires on poles that are approximately 32 ft in diameter; the set-up looks like the foundation of a gazebo. When a drone flies into the center, the frame transmits up to 12 kilowatts of power at efficiencies around 80 percent. This six-minute battery charge is enough for 25 minutes of drone power.
The frame can charge multiple drones inside the perimeter at one time, and the system is portable, so it can be moved for convenience whenever.
GET’s goal is to have these charging loops set up several miles from each other, so multiple drones can constantly observe an area and charge quickly without needing a human’s assistance.
