With a package footprint of 15 mm² and a height of 2.8 mm, the LTM4616 DC/DC µModule from Linear Technology includes all the support components needed for a single or dual point-of-load (POL) regulator: inductors, capacitors, DC/DC controller, compensation circuitry, and power switches. The device can regulate either two voltages ranging from 0.6 to 5.0 V at up to 8 A each, or one output voltage at up to 16 A by sharing current from each output in a multi-phase configuration. Versatility is extended with the ability to operate from either of two different input supply rails from 2.375 V to 5.50 V (6 V max) or from one input supply by tying the input pins together. Operating at an efficiency as high as 94%, the current-mode regulator has ±1.75% total DC output error over the full operating temperature range from -40°C to +125°C. The RoHS-coompliant regulator supports frequency synchronization, multiphase operation, spread spectrum phase modulation, output voltage tracking and margining. Safety features include overvoltage and overcurrent protection as well as thermal shutdown. The LTM4616 is available in 1,000-pieces at $19.45.
