Nanosilica curable epoxy, dubbed UV22, is now available from Master Bond Inc. This compound is developed for coating, sealing, and encapsulation applications. It features abrasion resistance, optical clarity, low shrinkage, and high physical strength. UV22 cures rapidly at room temperature upon exposure to an ultraviolet light source. It has an operating temperature range of -60°F to 300°F (-50°C to 150°C). Adding heat (195°F-257°F for 30 minutes) will give it a glass transition temperature of 275°F, which is higher than traditional UV systems. The post-curing process is also effective in increasing its chemical resistance to solvents, acids, and bases. It retains high transparency and low viscosity without sedimentation due to agglomerate-free colloidal dispersion of the nanoparticles in the resin. Other characteristics include a Shore D hardness of >80 and a tensile strength of >4,600 psi, refractive index of 1.52 and shrinkage of 1-2%, and a reactive design without solvents or dilutents. It ships in pint, quart, gallon, and 5 gallon containers, and is available in syringe applicators. Higher viscosities are also available.
