Intersil Corp. announces its single-chip ISL9208 and ISL9216/17 chipsets for cell balancing and over-current protection. These devices are integrated analog front ends for cell balancing and over-current protection in multi-cell li-ion battery packs. These devices can replace up to 17 FETs, 12 diodes, 53 resistors and 31 capacitors in some designs, and they will simplify designs for multi-cell battery powered packs for applications ranging from power tools to hybrid automotive vehicles. The built-in 3.3V voltage regulator reduces component count while providing power to the microcontroller. The devices provide protection through the ability to detect short circuits and over-current conditions, and they automatically shut down the power FETs when necessary.
