ITW Switches announced ActiveMetal, a rugged touch-sensitive switch series based on a new technology that eliminates the need for moving parts and infinitely extends component life. According to the company, the switches cannot be compromised by water, heat, chemicals, or even repeated blows from a heavy object. While they are insensitive to liquid spills and other contaminants, these switches have a familiar look and feel. ActiveMetal switches are available in 19 mm, 22 mm, 30 mm and 38 mm mounting diameters with 316 stainless or Type II anodized (clear, black, red, and green) aluminum 6061 body finish with momentary or latching action. Custom labeling/legending on the actuator surface is also available via laser-etching. They are ideally-suited for the harsh and hazardous environments typical of outdoor, industrial, security, medical, and military applications. Operationally, the unique ActiveMetal technology has its basis in trapped acoustic resonance combined with rugged metal housings. A finger -- or even a thickly gloved, protected hand -- touching the front of the switch dampens the vibration. The switches have virtually unlimited life, are not affected by ESD and RFI / EMI (when mounted), and operate at temperatures from -40°C. to +85°C. Input/output configurations are available as 5V DC input/digital output; 5V DC input/open collector output; and 10V to 24V DC input/open collector output.
