Audio IC specialist Sound Semiconductor announced availability of the SSI2164 Fatkeys™ Quad Voltage Controlled Amplifier.
A voltage controlled amplifier, or “VCA,” is a flexible building block for audio system. A control voltage provides gain and/or attention of voltage or current inputs and outputs. Applications include automatic, remote, or microprocessor controlled audio signal levels; for example compressor or mix console fader automation system. VCA’s are also used in electronic music synthesizers to modulate levels and mix waveforms. In addition to these more obvious uses, VCA gain cores are in essence transconductance amplifiers and can be configured as voltage controlled filters, oscillators, and much more.
The SSI2164 is a versatile building block for high-performance audio systems. Four independent channels are provided with a gain range from +20dB to -100dB using a -33mV/dB control constant. Current inputs and outputs give flexibility in system design, and a novel mode control permits biasing as class A, AB, or in-between to optimize noise versus distortion performance depending on design targets. The SSI2164 will operate from supplies as low as ±4V for battery-powered devices, and up to ±18V in systems where maximum headroom is desired. Distortion is typically 0.025% (Class A), and Class AB output noise is typically -96dBu.
The SSI2164 directly retrofits ADI’s discontinued SSM2164 positions without any changes to external components. In such applications, total harmonic distortion is lower across the board. For new designs, a two-fold increase in current handling allows reduction of input resistor values for additional improvement in signal-to-noise ratio, further enhancing flexibility of the device. The SSI2164 data sheet includes thought-provoking applications such as a highly-accurate temperature compensated exponential voltage-to-current converter.
The SSI2164 is offered in a 16-lead Small Outline Package. Priced at $1.93 for 1000 pieces, the SSI2164 is in stock for immediate shipment. Samples are available to qualified OEM’s; hobby and DIY enthusiasts are served through a growing network of Sound Semiconductor’s authorized resellers.
“The SSI2164 typifies the product we want to offer,” stated Dan Parks, President of Sound Semiconductor. “Audio engineers are always looking for high performance IC’s that solve design problems. The SSI2164 serves a wide variety of audio needs.”
