There is no shortage of connected gadgets on display this week at CES and Comcast has announced the launch of a new AI-powered security service to protect against threats as an increasing number of smart devices come online in the home.
The Xfinity xFi Advanced Security offering leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning to keep tabs on and analyze WiFi traffic in the home. The security automatically extends to any device as soon as it connects to the home network via the Xfinity Advanced Gateway, without the need for additional set up.
If suspicious activity is identified, the service blocks the threat in real time and notifies customers about the activity, as well as additional steps to take if needed in order to secure their device.
Comcast’s new offering was built with new connected devices in mind that might not have screens, like light bulbs or garage door openers, for example. Of course it also extends to typical devices like phones, tablets and computers.
One blocking and notification feature alerts users when embedded links on websites may be malware or phishing and provides information about why that’s an issue and therefore blocked, Fraser Stirling, Senior Vice President of Digital Home, Devices and AI, Comcast Cable explained in a video about the new service.
Cujo Al, a software and firmware provider for network operators, developed an advanced AI platform that helps power Comcast’s xFi Advanced Security.
“As the digital world gets more complex, we wanted to make it simple and easy for our customers to protect their home networks. That’s why we developed xFi Advanced Security,” said Stirling in a statement. “We want to give customers digital peace of mind for the devices they already own and the confidence to expand and evolve their connected homes knowing that every new camera, voice-assisted speaker or smart thermostat they add will be protected.”
Using the xFi dashboard, available via the mobile app or website, customers can see a rundown of what digital security actions were taken each day.
Comcast says the direct integration into xFi gateways provides a solution for protecting all devices that are connected to the home network at once.
xFi Advanced Security is available to 15 million customers and costs $6 per month. Consumers in some markets can also get the service as part of a package, Comcast noted.
