Remotely controlled robots aren’t new, but GE’s Global Research is working in particular on making a control interface for robots that can fit into smaller spaces than humans can reach. Their team includes Steve Gray, who took second place in last year’s $1 million NASA competition about controlling robots on Mars. The robots they’re working on closer to home can be as small as the palm of the hand, and could climb inside an engine or turbine without taking the machine apart. They’re working on integrating lidar onto the robots and sending the information back to a human controller with a VR setup, who can then give the robot the “okay” to perform its task.
