Charter Communications subscribers may experience a blackout of Viacom’s cable networks if the number two cable operator and owner of networks like Nickelodeon can’t agree on terms of a carriage renewal deal by Sunday.
Viacom has started putting message crawls on its channels for Charter subscribers, warning viewers that the networks may stop airing if an agreement isn’t reached.
“Viacom has made a series of very attractive offers to Charter that are consistent with terms we’ve recently reached with other large cable operators,” Viacom said in a public statement. “Importantly, these offers would enable Charter to lower Spectrum subscribers’ bills, while also giving them more access to shows across Nickelodeon, BET, MTV, Comedy Central and other Viacom networks.”
In May, Charter moved BET, MTV, Nickelodeon, Spike, and VH1 out of its basic programming tier, hinting that renewal negotiations might not go smoothly.
“Viacom is committed to developing strong, mutually beneficial relationships with our distribution partners,” Viacom added. “Despite our efforts, Charter continues to insist on unreasonable and extreme terms that are totally inconsistent with the market. While we’re making every effort to reach a new deal, Charter’s actions may force a disruption in their service.”
Altice USA and Walt Disney Co., recently reached a comprehensive multi-year distribution agreement, avoiding a black out for Optimum customers.
