Elon Musk made headlines last week by detailing his plans to put a functioning settler colony on Mars by 2024. On Friday, SpaceX livestreamed a 40-minute talk at the International Astronautical Congress in Adelaide, Australia in which Musk continued to develop his plan to “make life multiplanetary.”
Colonization at that scale will require the technology currently in use in the Falcon 9 rocket and crewed and uncrewed Dragon capsules, as well as the Falcon Heavy rocket designed to carry crewmembers beyond Earth’s orbit. Making it to Mars may also require a crewed beast of a ship called BFR (it stands for exactly what you think it does). SpaceX plans for the BFR to be able to carry 40 passenger cabins and refuel in orbit. Watch the full speech below:
