AT&T is rolling ahead with deployments of its ultra-high-speed internet services, announcing the availability of its G.fast coaxial technology in eight cities and fiber-based offering in two new metro areas.
According to the carrier, G.fast can now be deployed in apartments and condo complexes across Boston, Denver, Minneapolis, New York City, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Seattle, and Tampa. Running over existing coaxial cables, G.fast can currently deliver speeds of up to 500 Mbps. However, AT&T noted the technology will also allow it to offer even faster speeds in the future.
“We’re tapping into the existing internet infrastructure in some multifamily properties to bring ultra-fast internet in less time and with less disruption than replacing the network with fiber,” AT&T Connected Communities SVP Ed Balcerzak comments. “While fiber to the unit remains the best broadband solution for most properties where possible, G.fast and fixed millimeter-wave provide connectivity to properties that aren’t able to support fiber. AT&T is committed to providing apartments and condos with connectivity across the nation, and innovations such as G.fast are helping us to do that.”
The operator said it is working toward G.fast deployments in an additional 14 cities, including Albany, Buffalo, and Rochester, N.Y.; Baltimore; Cincinnati; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Hartford, Conn.; Omaha, Neb.; Pittsburgh; Portland, Ore.; Providence, R.I.; Richmond, Va.; Washington, D.C; and Salt Lake City. Those will come in the “near future,” AT&T said.
AT&T on Tuesday also touted the expansion of its fiber-based high-speed internet service to two new metro areas, including Biloxi-Gulfport, Miss. and Savannah, Ga. The operator said it’s also expanded service availability across the 20 major cities where it already has service. AT&T’s fiber-based plans include AT&T Internet 50, AT&T Internet 100, and AT&T Internet 1000.
So far this year, AT&T said it’s added more than 1.5 million locations to its fiber network. The operator said it plans to add another 1.5 million by the end of this year for a total of at least 7 million locations served.
