Texas Southern University in Houston is now using a 10 Gbps Ethernet network provided by Comcast Business, according to the operator. It’s being used to bulk up the school’s online learning capabilities, help improve campus-wide communications, and boost network access, mobile device management, and security for around 9,000 students and 1,400 faculty and staff. The university has 40 buildings across its 150-acre campus.
“Our mission is to offer innovative programs that help our students develop into lifelong learners, engaged citizens, and creative leaders in their local, national, and global communities,” TSU President Austin A. Lane, says. “Today, this just isn’t possible without high-speed internet and reliable network services. Our partnership with Comcast Business enables us to provide our students with the technological advantages they need to succeed – not only here at the university, but in the real world as well.”
Previously, TSU had a 1 Gbps service from another provider. TSU can now reportedly offer one building the same amount of bandwidth that was previously designated for the entire campus.
“The improved bandwidth is a signification expansion of the campus’ network connectivity,” Michael Boone, director of IT enterprise infrastructure at TSU, says. “We’re now able to enhance WiFi and mobility solutions for students by building administrative platforms that use private and public cloud, web-based solutions for curriculum hosting, recruiting, emergency notification, and Microsoft Office 365.”
