16 students from Green Mountain College in Vermont created the "OTIS" or Optimal Traveling Independent Space. The 70 square-foot pod home includes a sleeping area, a composting toilet, and its own, natural systems for indoor plumbing and lighting.

The off-the-grid domicile uses a 120 W solar panel.

OTIS can be towed by a car on a standard-sized 1.5 x 2.5 m (5 x 8 ft) open-bed utility trailer.

Total cost: about $9,000.
