Openwave Systems Inc. said Monday that it was seeking court approval of its settlement with mobile phone software maker Myriad Group AG, under which Openwave hopes to pay Myriad $12 million to settle a legal dispute and to "secure" from Myriad the ownership of a portfolio of patents.

Simon Wilkinson, CEO of Zurich-based Myriad, said in a separate statement that the settlement "demonstrates our continued ability to successfully protect Myriad's trading rights."

According to the statement from Openwave, which makes mediation and messaging software for mobile phones and is based in Redwood City, Calif., the litigation grew out of Myriad's purchase from Openwave in 2008 of mobile phone products and patents.
