VMware Inc. said Monday that it has agreed to buy Shavlik Technologies, a provider of cloud-based information technology management software and services to small and medium-sized businesses.

VMware makes virtualization software that allows one computer to function as several, helping businesses cut costs by saving on energy and equipment. Shavlik's technology lets its customers manage both physical and virtual machines, deploy software and control power use, among other tasks.

Financial terms were not disclosed for the deal, which is expected to close later this quarter.

Shares of VMware fell $4.49, or nearly 5 percent, to close at $89.45.
