Intel Corp., the world's largest chip maker, said Monday that it completed its purchase of security software maker McAfee Inc.

Intel said in August that it would buy McAfee for $7.68 billion in an all-cash deal that marks the chip maker's biggest acquisition in its 42-year history.

The acquisition, which is expected to help Intel improve the security of its chips, had been expected to close during the first quarter.

Intel shares lost 39 cents to close at $21.47.
