A gift from Distinguished Professor J.N. Reddy and his wife, Aruna, will benefit mechanical engineering doctoral students at Texas A&M University.
The couple’s contribution of $20,000 to the Texas A&M Foundation has established the Aruna and J.N. Reddy Distinguished Fellow in Computational Mechanics. Funds from the Texas A&M mechanical engineering department will complete the $30,000 endowment.
“Any meaningful measure of accomplishments must include service to the community. Serving the community of students and scholars through education and research is one of the themes of Vision 2020, and we are very proud to contribute to Texas A&M’s spirit of helping others,” said Reddy, holder of the Oscar S. Wyatt Chair in Mechanical Engineering and director of the university’s Advanced Computational Mechanics Laboratory.
Recipients of the fellowship will be full-time graduate students seeking a Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering and whose overall grade point average is a minimum 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
“Fellowships serve a vital role in helping us attract the best and brightest Ph.D. students to our program. As a faculty member, Dr. Reddy has supervised dozens of doctoral students over the years that he has been in our department. We appreciate Dr. and Mrs. Reddy’s generosity and commitment to our program,” said Dennis O’Neal, mechanical engineering department head and holder of the Holdredge-Paul Professorship.
Reddy holds joint adjunct faculty appointments in the aerospace engineering, civil engineering and mathematics departments, and serves as the coordinator of the Mechanics and Materials (MEMA) interdisciplinary program between those departments and mechanical engineering. He directs the university’s Computational Science and Engineering Program.
He is a renowned researcher in the broad fields of applied mechanics and computational engineering science. His research credentials have earned national and international acclaim, attested by numerous awards, citations and over 100 keynote and plenary lecture invitations to international conferences.
With over 10,000 citations, Reddy is the only engineering faculty member listed in ISIHighlyCited.com, a Thomson Reuters website highlighting individual researchers who have demonstrated great influence in their fields as measured by citations to their work. Additionally he has a rating over 46 by H-index, a statistical tool used to assess the productivity and scientific impact of a scientist.
He is a fellow of seven professional societies, serves on the editorial boards of two dozen journals, and is editor-in-chief of three other journals. Among his recent professional honors are the American Society of Composites Distinguished Research Award and the U.S. Association of Computational Mechanics Computational Solid Mechanics Award. In 2009 he was awarded an honorary degree from the Technical University of Lisbon (Portugal).
At Texas A&M he has received the Bush Excellence Award for Faculty in International Research, the Lockheed Martin Fort Worth Company Excellence in Teaching Award and university-level Distinguished Achievement awards in teaching and research.
Reddy received his bachelor of engineering from Osmania University (India) and his master’s degree from Oklahoma State University, both in mechanical engineering; and his Ph.D. from the University of Alabama in engineering mechanics. He previously served on faculties at the University of Oklahoma and Virginia Tech before coming to Texas A&M in 1992.
Aruna Reddy has dedicated her life to the family and supported her husband in his pursuit of professional excellence. She and her husband also have helped family members in India pursue goals of higher education.
“Professor Reddy is as passionate about students as he is about teaching and research. This endowed fellowship will provide educational opportunities for an unending line of mechanical engineering graduate students,” said Jennifer Hester, director of development with the Texas A&M Foundation.
U.S. News & World Report ranks Texas A&M’s mechanical department ninth among undergraduate and graduate programs at the nation’s public universities.
