A German court says it has ruled against Google Inc.'s subsidiary YouTube LLC in a copyright dispute over uploaded videos from singer Sarah Brightman.
The Hamburg state court on Friday said in a statement that YouTube must pay compensation as several videos uploaded by its users violated copyright laws.
It says a standardized question to users whether they posses the necessary rights to publish the material is not sufficient to acquit YouTube of the legal responsibility for the content, especially as the platform can be used anonymously.
The court says YouTube must not publish those videos anymore and provide information to settle the amount of a compensation.
The plaintiff was not identified and a court spokesman could not be reached for comment.
