In recognition of the World Cup, the astronauts on the International Space Station got their own game of soccer going. Obviously, the rules and logistics are a little bit different when neither the ball nor the players are subject to the whims of gravity. The video stars U.S. astronauts Reid Wiseman and Steve Swanson and fellow German astronaut Alexander Gerst.
My first reaction was that soccer in space is hilarious. That microgravity really plays havoc with the ability to play sports. Plus, they’re surrounds by millions and millions of dollar’s worth of equipment. It’s difficult to stabilize yourself enough to really wind up, but the smiles on these guys is worth the attempt.
They start off by wishing the teams and fans good luck and saying they’ll be watching.
One performs what thye’re calling a “bicycle’ soccer kick while another performs a killer save (that would probably be impossible and very painful here on earth.)
As a side note, it always tickles me when they just let the microphone float in front of them.
