It was really only a matter of time before QR codes invaded bedtime, but at least they made it interesting.
Smart PJs (patent-pending) are a new kind of clothing complete with QR code-like scannable patches that could make bedtime a little more fun. First, you download the app onto your phone. At bedtime, your kid can put on the jammies ($25 girls or boys in four sizes) and select some dots to scan. There is no report on specifics, but the PJs will provide either a story, poem, or a few images to see. It can also read the story to your child, but if you prefer you can just turn off the sound and read the words on the screen.
Aside from the novelty factor, this could be a great option for parents with kids who aren’t big readers. The technology element adds a little whimsy and fun to the before-bed book, and if you let your kid pick which “dots” to scan, they might be more interested in reading it.
It definitely shouldn’t replace real books—kids learn a lot from the tactile experience of reading — but it could be a cool treat once in a while or a great way to avoid lugging books around on vacation or visits.
