Sensors Expo Report, 2009
July 1, 2009 2:12 pm | Articles | CommentsEnergy harvesting technology took center stage at this year’s Sensors Expo in Rosemont, IL. Whether the solution obtained its power from the sun, heat, vibration, wind, RF or magnetics, there was a device at the show to take advantage of many of these or other ambient conditions. Infinite Power Solutions’ THINERGY thin micro-energy cells (MECs), in capacities of .0 mAh and 0.4 mAh initially, are positioned as the world’s most powerful batteries for their size and outperform all other micro-batteries.

Print your own Stormtrooper
March 10, 2009 7:06 am | by Jason Lomberg, Technical Editor | Articles | CommentsFor those who’ve never been, Electronics West is one of seven shows (including EW, Medical Design and Manufacturing West, Pacific Design and Manufacturing West, Automation Technology Expo West, Plastec West, West Pack, and Green Manufacturing West) co-located within the Anaheim Convention Center. CES 2009 Day 3 + Recap
January 10, 2009 3:02 pm | by Jason Lomberg, Technical Editor | News | CommentsI closed out International CES 2009 by visiting L-com and Luminous Devices, and by taking a quick stroll through the North, Central, and South Halls again ("quick" being a relative term). Overall, CES 2009 didn't exhibit much innovation, at least anything groundbreaking. Sixense has some potential. I'll have to keep my eye on that. Energizer's Zinc Air Prismatic Battery could make a big splash in the small electronics market. As previously mentioned, I'll be covering the "ZAP Battery" in a future Efficiency Zone column. A number of companies were showing off advanced 3D technology, and in this humble editor's opinion, the tech may finally have matured.
CES 2009 Day 2
January 9, 2009 11:25 am | by Jason Lomberg, Technical Editor | News | CommentsI had appointments with Energizer and Analog Devices today, and Samsung gave us a "booth tour." Samsung wasn't being pretentious when they called it a "tour." Believe me, the booth looks like a small house, and must have cost a small fortune. Energizer gave me a demo of their new Zinc Air Primatic Battery, which I'll feature in a future Efficiency Zone. Analog Devices had a host of new products, including an innovative controller that will inevitably replace the Wiimote, the Sixense. We also found time to check out a little company called Microsoft. Enjoy the images!
CES 2009 Day 1
January 9, 2009 12:46 am | by Jason Lomberg, Technical Editor | News | CommentsSo far, the big themes this year seem to be Green Technology and 3D. 3D Technology has been around for decades, mainly as a gimmick in movie theaters, but it may finally have come of age. Most of the major manufacturers have 3D tech on display, and filmmaker James Cameron (Titanic) is partnering with Panasonic to use 3D tech on his new movie, Avatar. This Editor tried out the various 3D displays, and they seemed leagues ahead of their gimmicky ancestors. As always, enjoy!
