Welcome to Engineering Update, brought to you by Mouser Electronics (http://www.mouser.com). I'm Kasey Panetta, managing editor of ECN. In this weeks episode: Daz Fellows has a custom jet luge, which features twin-turbines with a combined output of 537 pounds of thrust and a custom board made from carbon fiber, and next year, he will attempt to reach a speed of 300 mph.
DURAKOOL is proud to debut the new electronic tilt sensors to their line of sensing devices. The E-tilt sensor is multi-axis and can measure angle differentiation in two planes simultaneously. On top of its multi directional feature this sensor is programmed to your customers' exact specifications.
At least that’s what hysterical media reports would have you believe. The standard account goes something like this – tired of doing its master’s bidding (er, cleaning), an iRobot Roomba 760 made history by committing the first robot suicide. The poor guy chose an especially gruesome way to kick the bucket, committing self-immolation by driving itself onto a kitchen hotplate....
Finally, adults don’t have to relinquish the joy of playing with blocks! Most of the fun in Legos lies with the customizable nature of the toy and the ability to stray from the image on the box to create something truly unique. Dutch designer Dave Hakkens channeled this childhood pastime into a new kind of functional and distinctive smartphone design called PhoneBloks

Murata announced the first in a series of Point-of- Load (PoL) non-isolated DC-DC converters based on the Digital Control Architecture from Powervation. The DOSA compatible OKLF 25A PoL has been designed to address the industry's growing requirement for low voltages (1.25V and less)....
Cal Test Electronics today introduced the new CP6000 Series, a four-model family of ELDITEST AC/DC oscilloscope clamp on current probes with the highest frequency range available on the market. Along with the current probes, kits include an insulated BNC cable assembly for scope connection, BNC to banana plug adapter, selected region power adapter and user manual.
You can’t drive very far without seeing a cellular tower. As more Americans curtail or ditch their landlines in favor of mobile phones, and increasingly smartphones that require high-speed internet, network operators must keep pace with the incredible amount of data traveling through their infrastructures.
Today on Engineering Newswire, we're launching drones from tiny boats, recycling shower water, using sensors to prevent serious brain injuries, and making batteries more efficient by going viral. Typically, distance per charge is the biggest complaint and fear of those driving electric vehicles. Now, MIT researchers have started using genetically modified viruses to help the situation.
Gigabit ethernet switch solutions speed the integration of modern networking technology into defense platformsNovember 20, 2013 4:29 pm | Curtiss-Wright Controls | Product Releases | Comments
Curtiss-Wright Controls Defense Solutions has introduced two new cost-effective rugged Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) Switch solutions, the SMS-652 Rugged Switchbox subsystem and VPX3-652 GbE Switch module, that speed and ease the integration of modern networking technology into defense platforms.
Mouser Electronics is now stocking Atmel’s XMEGA E-Series microcontrollers that target space constraints with compact devices and offer power efficiency and an unmatched combination of memory size, low sleep current and short wake-up time.
B&K Precision today announced its new 2510 Series handheld digital storage oscilloscopes (DSO). Four models make up this new line of dual-channel oscilloscopes that includes 60 MHz and 100 MHz bandwidth models in non-isolated and isolated designs.
For many years the most effective test socket contact design for BGA devices was the "pogo pin", a pin design that has been in use since the 1950s when it was invented by Everett Charles Technologies. At that time, its primary use was to test PWBs. Over the years the basic pogo design was adapted to accommodate the testing of BGA devices.
I recently went to a “Pumpkin Sling” (aka Punkin’ Chunkin’) where participants designed trebuchets to see who could get theirs to throw a pumpkin the farthest. A lot of the teams were made up of kids, who all did an incredible job building the machines. I was particularly inspired by a young man from a Cub Scout troop who very clearly outlined how the machine worked and how they had built it.
Megger now offers a rugged, handheld, battery-operated TTR tester (transformer turns ratio). The TTR20, a complement to the world-renowned hand-cranked TTR, measures turns ratio, polarity and excitation current in single-phase and three-phase transformers, current and potential transformers as well as voltage regulators.
Advanced Thermal Solutions, Inc. (ATS) has added to its series of Star LED heat sinks designed for convection cooling of high heat flux LEDs. Each of the 32 heat sinks provides enhanced heat transfer for effective LED cooling without fans or blowers. Cooling performance reaches more than 60 K....
Tektronix, Inc. announced that its real-time spectrum analyzers (RTSAs) offer up to 165 MHz acquisition bandwidth, asserted to be the widest available in this price range. This bandwidth supports demanding applications such as high-margin, high accuracy WLAN 802.11ac characterization and troubleshooting
Mark-10 Corporation has announced its Series TT02 torque tool testers for the accurate and reliable verification of applied torque values derived from torque screwdrivers, wrenches, and other small hand tools used on the factory floor and in other production environments.
Power Integrations added devices optimized for high-line applications, completing the roll-out of its LYTSwitch-4 LED-driver IC family. LYTSwitch-4 ICs deliver accurate output current and high efficiency for bulb and tube applications and high-bay lighting.
Teledyne LeCroy introduces the HDO4000-MS and HDO6000-MS high definition oscilloscopes which combine 16 channels of flexible mixed signal capabilities with HD4096 high definition technology, long memory, and a compact form factor, in bandwidths from 200 MHz to 1 GHz.
Electronics equipment development generally includes one or more of design verification testing, reliability testing, and product characterization where hardware behavior is studied and documented. Design verification testing (DVT) in electrical and electronic systems is the process whereby the behavior of circuits is examined step-by-step....
Enabling flexible, cost-effective testing of tire-pressure monitoring systems and other automotive subsystemsNovember 19, 2013 11:43 am | by Hock Yew Yeap, Agilent Technologies, Inc. | Articles | Comments
Passenger safety is a major element of every automotive design. This focus is supported by ongoing efforts to enhance safety-related features, either as a competitive advantage in the marketplace or in response to government requirements. One such mandated feature is the tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS)....
