Red Chip for Projection and Automotive Applications

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors announces its red 1 mm2 chip, featuring thin-film technology, with brightness values of more than 300 lm. It will be used in the company’s DRAGON and OSTAR LEDs, and it is targeted for applications in the projection and automotive sectors. The red chip has a power consumption of 6W, achieves 52 lm/W, and it features a wavelength of 615 nm from an operating current of 2A.

DALSA Corp. announces its Spyder 3 CL line scan camera with camera link interface. Its responsivity addresses low lighting situations. At its core is dual line scan sensor technology that achieves responsivity and throughput of 80 Mega pixels per second. Dual line scan technology offers a clear performance benefit. This camera can be used for applications including glass edge inspection, general purpose web inspection, postal sorting, industrial metrology, pick-and-place applications, and medical and scientific imaging.

Graphics Display Controller for Automotive TFT LCD Panels

Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. announces its TX4964FG system-on-chip (SoC) targeted at instrument-cluster applications ranging from back-up camera displays to full-size, reconfigurable instrument clusters. It drives and manages the small-size thin-film transistor (TFT) LCD panels increasingly found in instrument clusters in medium- to high-end automobiles. The device integrates the CPU, hardware-graphics engine, TFT LCD panel controller, digital-camera interface and frame-buffer memory in a compact 176-pin QFP package.

VGA and XGA resolution TFT LCDs

Apollo Display Technologies has announced that it can furnish VGA and XGA resolution TFT LCDs backlit by LED rails that are addressable via the company’s standard PRISMA II industrial controller board to switch back and forth between day and night modes. These LCDs can be used in the full range of night vision imaging systems (NVIS) applications including displays in military aircraft cockpits, tanks, trucks, ground mobile applications, communications equipment and electronics.

Bright Sunlight Visible RGB LEDs

LEDtronics introduces the RGB-1007-001, a low profile, four legs through-hole LED that offers full-spectrum red, green and blue LEDs (RGB LED). These discrete LEDs provide high performance and visibility in a compact size of 4.90 mm x 6.5 mm +0.15. The red, green and blue diodes emit high-intensity light in a viewing angle of 120°. The red diode's wavelength is 635 nm, the wavelength of the green diode is 520 nm and the blue operates at 470 nm.

Eye-Safe Diode Lasers

Intense Ltd. announces its HPD Series 2400 1550 nm eye-safe laser diodes that are high peak power, 1550 nm pulsed lasers for use in distance measurement applications that require eye-safe laser sources. The lasers are available in source sizes of 150 µm and 380 µm, and they are designed to operate at pulse widths of less than 200 ns, duty cycles to 0.1 percent.

Lambda extended its NV-family of configurable AC/DC power supplies to include a range of models designed with medical applications in mind.  With a reinforced 4 kV AC input to output isolation, the units meet the rigorous IEC 60601 international safety standards for medical equipment, making them suitable for use in patient-connected medical applications. The power supplies include PFC, efficiencies up to 90 percent and output power ratings of up to 180W (200W peak).

100-Lumen LEDs Available in Volume Quantities

Cree, Inc. announces commercial availability of XLamp LEDs with minimum luminous flux of 100 lumens at 350 mA. They are said to be the first LEDs to be available in volume with this level of performance. They can deliver either 25 percent greater brightness with improved efficacy, or they can deliver up to 55 percent greater brightness at the same efficacy when compared to the previous generation of XLamp LEDs.

High Speed Photocoupler

Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc., introduces its 5V, 50 MegaBaud1 (MBd) TLP117 IC photocoupler for high speed digital transmission applications. It specifically addresses applications with isolation and switching speed requirements such as system I/O interfaces and factory automation networks. The device is an optically coupled isolator consisting of a gallium aluminum arsenide (GaAlAs) light-emitting diode and an integrated high-gain, high- speed photo detector.

Ceramic-Substrate SMT LEDs with Heat-Dissipating Capabilities and Wide Angles of Light Emission

Lumex introduced KoolBrite SMT LEDs. They use the company’s ceramic substrate material, a unique epoxy lens, and a manufacturing process that can cast the lense directly onto the ceramic substrate. The LEDs are capable of withstanding wave soldering, while providing a useable operating life of 50,000 hours with no loss in light output levels. They virtually eliminate failures due to thermal junction deterioration. These LEDs are appropriate for applications including illumination or indication on PCBs, annunciator and control panels, telecom switches and central office equipment, and medical equipment.

Multi-lamp Controller for CCFL Displays

Microsemi announced a high performance multi-lamp controller designed with features optimized for lighting the cold cathode fluorescent lamps used in large screen LCD TV applications. The LX6501 controller minimizes external components by fully integrating on-chip gate drivers having the capacity to drive N channel power MOSFETs on both the low and high sides of full bridge inverters. Input voltages can be as high as 27V. An on-chip regulator generates internal driver operating voltages that supply the output gate drive circuit.

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors is adding a white LED to its Golden Dragon ARGUS family. It combines proprietary ThinGaN (indium gallium nitride) technology for brightness and uniformity with the patented ARGUS lens -- specially designed for high efficiency backlighting and illumination -- and the company’s chip level conversion (CLC) technology. Each package contains one HBLED with a thin phosphor coating over the emission area, applied at the wafer level.

Fujitsu Components America introduced a 17" (diagonal) product for the growing retail kiosk market. The four-wire, 17" model is the largest in the company’s standard resistive touch panel line. Other applications include desktop touch monitors, Point of Sale, and industrial controls. The panel features 82 percent transmissivity and an anti-glare treatment to enhance viewability in high ambient light.
