miniature audio and haptic excitersHiWave Technologies PLC announces combined miniature audio and haptic exciters for touch panels and screens in hand held consumer electronic products. Applications include tablet computers, media players and remote control units. Each exciter consists of a 9mm diameter voice coil mounted on plastic suspension. Overall height is 6mm and width 12mm, making it the smallest moving coil transducer in HiWave's range.

The exciters actuate the touch panel, generating bending waves, transforming it into a Distributed Mode Loudspeaker (DML). With two independent channels, the exciters can generate stereo audio, with a nominally flat response from 200Hz to 15kHz.

When used with a HiWave driver module, a pair of HIHX09C5-8 exciters maximises bending waves at specific locations and frequencies, enabling tactile feedback on virtual keypads and sliders. Users experience the same 'feel' as if they were using electromechanical keys and sliders.

The exciters are designed for use with touch screens up to 12 inches (diagonal measurement), have a power handling capability of 0.5W rms and nominal drive impedances of 4, 8, or 16 Ohms.

HiWave CEO, James Lewis, said: "We're developing ever-smaller exciters and our unique, patented technology means that tactile feedback and sound are delivered through the same components, helping designers create smaller products with higher functionality. Many of today's touch panels deliver an uncompelling and unreliable user experience. Haptics technology transforms this into one where every touch feels like a real, positive keystroke."

HIHX09C5-8 miniature exciters are available in sample quantities now, costing around $4.40 each at 100+ pieces. OEM quantities will be available in May.
