LTE Security Gateway Enhances Firewall and IPsec Tunneling

Mon, 10/25/2010 - 7:22am
ATCA-7220RadiSys, a leading provider of innovative hardware and software platforms for next generation IP-based wireless, wireline and video networks, today announced the RadiSys LTE SEG, a security gateway targeted for Long Term Evolution (LTE) deployments. LTE mobile networks need security capabilities for user authentication, data integrity and encryption at a carrier grade level. Mobile operators worldwide are planning and deploying LTE networks, but they must now consider cost-effective solutions to address these security issues associated with the all-IP architecture. The RadiSys LTE SEG is the first 3GPP Network Domain Security (NDS) compliant security gateway that enables high performance firewall and IPsec tunneling in a single carrier grade solution.

“The security landscape in mobile networks is changing significantly with the rise in 3G data traffic and the transition to the LTE architecture,” said Patrick Donegan, senior analyst, Heavy Reading. “As this transition takes place, mobile operators are going to need new approaches to securing their network.”

“We have responded to our TEM customers’ request for carrier grade security, and leveraged our experience as the leading standards-based ATCA solutions provider to deliver a rapid time-to-market solution,” said Anthony Ambrose, vice president and general manager, communications networks, RadiSys. “The RadiSys LTE SEG is a purpose-built security gateway that can be deployed as a standalone network element, or easily integrated into existing Telecom Equipment Manufacturer products.”

About the RadiSys LTE SEG
The RadiSys LTE SEG is a high performance IPsec tunneling and firewall network element that enables security in the wireless infrastructure. With 10-15 Gbps of throughput, it offers 5x performance improvement over current solutions in a fully redundant 2U system. This level of performance is required to ensure cost-effective security for new access networks and inter-domain links supporting massive amounts of IP data from thousands of LTE cell sites.

The LTE SEG also provides a stateful firewall with robust IP filters and attack prevention mechanisms to protect Enhanced Packet Core network elements from security threats and cyber attacks. It supports more than four million concurrent IP flows with pre-defined and custom filters, consistency checks and denial-of-service (DoS) prevention mechanisms in a fully redundant 2U ATCA system.

In addition, the LTE SEG enables operators to enhance their existing 2G/3G mobile networks with secure wireless access solutions - including femtocells, I-WLAN and UMA/GAN - which use the public Internet to securely backhaul voice, data and video traffic.

Product Availability
The RadiSys LTE SEG is based on the proven, widely deployed, carrier grade Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture (ATCA) and is optimally packaged for telecom equipment manufacturers. The LTE SEG is available as a 2U system or as an ATCA blade that can be incorporated into other network elements. The RadiSys LTE SEG will be available for trials in December and commercially available for deployment in the first half of 2011.
