LED Boosts Brightness for Small Projectors with No Increase in Size

Thu, 06/17/2010 - 8:38am
compact LEDThe OSTAR Compact LED from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors is characterized by improved high-current capability and lower thermal resistance for more light output. It can handle up to 6A in pulsed mode, making it appropriate for pico and pocket projectors for small mobile terminals. The new OSTAR Compact is accommodated in the same 3.9 mm x 3.6 mm package size as the previous version, enabling small projectors to be designed with higher brightness without increasing their size. Instead of 4 A, the new LED can now be pulsed up to 6 A, achieving 350 lm in amber, 600 lm in green and 165 lm in blue in pulsed mode (typically 120 Hz, 2 ms, Ts= 25°C). Owing to a new packaging material, its thermal resistance has been reduced to 3 K/W, compared to 6 K/W for the previous version, allowing heat to be dissipated more efficiently.
