Temperature Sensors Measure Substrate Diodes

Mon, 01/05/2009 - 5:07am

SMSC EMC141x/EMC107xTargeting notebook PCs, servers, and industrial and embedded systems, SMSC’s EMC141x and EMC107x families of temperature sensors measure the temperature of a substrate diode found on GPUs, CPUs, FPGAs, or ASICs. The devices incorporate automatic beta compensation that detects the requirements of a thermal diode and self-configures the measurement attributes. The components have resistance error correction that adjusts for common series resistance found in substrate diodes and traces that would otherwise lead to measurement error.  The units have ideality configuration that compensates for the common error effect present in substrate diodes and discrete transistors to avoid a spreading error over various temperatures. The products use anti-parallel diodes to combine the functionality of two remotes into two pins. The units offer fixed and addressable SMBus options, and 8-pin or 10-pin MSOP or DFN packaging options. Pricing ranges from $0.75 to $1.00, and $0.65 to $0.95 each, respectively, in 1,000 quantities.
