Microcontrollers Target Driver-Assist Vehicle Applications
Created to address the increasingly popular “preventative safety” features in new vehicles, the 32-bit SH74504 and SH74513 microcontrollers (MCUs) from Renesas Technology feature on-chip flash memory and peripheral sets tailored for driver-assist systems. Examples of such “proactive” in-vehicle features include lane-departure warning systems, adaptive cruise control functions and blind-spot monitors. The 240-MHz devices use the RISC SuperH SH-4A CPU, fabricated with 90-nm process technology, and incorporate up to 2 MB of flash, 512 KB of SRAM, and a 64-KB cache. Features of the 17mm × 17mm, 292-pin BGA packaged MCUs include a 5-channel CAN function and the SH74504 also includes 2-channel FlexRay functionality as well. When operating at 240MHz, the MCUs operate at 432 MIPS (432 million instructions per second) and 1.68 GFLOPS (1.68 billion floating point operations per second) while consuming 1.5 W of power.
