PCIe Switches Integrate DMA Engine
Offering configurable ports ranging from x1 to x8, PLX Technology’s ExpressLane PEX 8619 (16 lanes and ports), PEX 8615 (12 lanes and ports), and PEX 8609 (8 lanes and ports) PCIe Gen2-compliant switches incorporate a direct memory access (DMA) engine. The components provide 4 DMA channels supporting data transfers between I/O devices connected to any of the available ports while maintaining independence from the transparent switch functionality with throughput of up to 3 Gbps per DMA channel. The products display a maximum latency of 140 ns, power requirements down to 1.2 W (8609), QoS via 2 virtual channels per port, spread spectrum clock isolation via dual clock domains, end-to-end data integrity, and support for up to 256 descriptors. Each of the DMA channels can saturate an x8 link at up to 4GB/s in one direction, and each descriptor supports transfer sizes up to 128 MB.
