PMIC Targets Handheld Apps
Integrating a single-cell, lithium-ion (Li+)/lithium-polymer (Li-Poly) charger with proprietary Smart Power Selector circuitry, Maxim Integrated Products’ MAX8819A power-management IC (PMIC) functions in portable media players, MP3 players, GPS devices, and other handheld applications. The 4 mm × 4 mm × 0.8 mm 28-pin QFN-packaged component uses 3 2 MHz step-down converters and a step-up converter with serial-step dimming control for powering from 2 to 6 WLEDs. The Smart Power Selector circuitry manages power distribution between a battery, USB/AC-to-DC adapter, and system load; allows the system to operate with a non-charged or deeply discharged battery; and provides thermal-limiting circuitry. The device offers up to 95% efficiency for the full load range to maximize standby and runtime operation via a 28 V step-up and 3 fully synchronous, step-down switching regulators. The IC operates with a 2 MHz switching frequency from -40°C to 85°C. Pricing starts at $3.65 in 1,000 quantities and up.
