RF Dongle Reference Design Uses Single RFIC
Providing an air data rate of up to 2 Mbps, a single-chip USB dongle reference design based on the nRF24LU1 RFIC with integrated RF synthesizer and PLL is intended for use in applications such as PC peripherals, remote devices, and sports accessories. The design integrates the RF chip, PCB antenna, 16 MHz crystal, and required passives in a 12 mm × 32 mm form factor that is FCC, ETSI, and USB compliant. The nRF24LU1 RFIC integrates a 2.4 GHz RF transceiver, a USB 2.0-compliant device controller, a 8-bit microcontroller, 16 kB of flash memory, and an internal voltage regulator taking power directly from the USB bus. Features include two control, ten bulk/interrupt, and two ISO endpoints as well as a dedicated 512 bytes of endpoint buffer RAM, three 16-bit timers/counters, and an AES encryption/decryption co-processor. A development kit is also available with programming tools and configuration and evaluation software.
