Solid State Relays Cut ON Resistance By 50 PercentSTMicroelectronics introduced a quad high-side intelligent power switch (IPS) -- the VNI4140K -- which is produced using the latest generation of ST’s VIPower technology to achieve a 50 percent saving in Rds(on) compared to earlier devices with the same die size, officials said. The reduction in on-resistance and quiescent current saves energy through lower losses. IPS devices integrate a logic interface, drivers and protection circuits on the same chip as a power stage, to simplify system design and save space in high-power industrial applications such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs), NC (numerical control) machines, robotics and building automation systems. Device power consumption is cut by 40 percent compared to earlier generation VIPower devices. These intelligent power switches include a range of current and thermal protection features, including per-channel diagnostic bits.
