Switch-Mode Device Alternatives to Linear Regulators for Energy Star Products

Enpirion introduced a 2A buck-mode device with integrated inductor technology. The company calls its EN5322QI the “LDO Killer,” which it positions as a replacement for linear regulators to meet Energy Star requirements. The part integrates all converter functionality including MOSFET switches, control and compensation, and the inductor, in a 6 mm × 4 mm × 1.1 mm QFN package, while requiring only a single input and single output ceramic filter capacitor. The device has a wide 2.4V to 5.5V input range and has a VID programmable output range from 0.6V to 3.3V. The EN5322QI is capable of sourcing a continuous 2A over the entire industrial temperature range, and it provides a power density of >70W per square inch. The company’s high frequency silicon enables the shrinking and hence integration of the magnetics. Integration of the magnetics confines the high-frequency switching currents which cause the noise and EMI; historically the bane of switch-mode DC/DC converters. Integration of the inductor also simplifies the design process. As a result of the part’s very high switching frequency, the EN5322QI has desirable transient performance. In addition, its type III voltage control scheme provides desirable load matching to the sub 90 nm loads such as advanced processors, FPGAs, and complex ASICs. The part is sampling, and pricing is set at $2.23 in quantities of 1,000 pieces.
