Taiyo Yuden introduced its LS6D0812A-RH low-profile DC/AC inverters for driving cold-cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL) in liquid crystal display (LCD) backlighting applications. It is designed specifically for use with 10" to 15" industrial-grade LCD panels widely used in medical electronics, machine tools, digital signage, point-of-sale / kiosks, touch-screen and test and measurement equipment applications. The device provides dual LCD panel capability, and features brightness / backlight on-off control and a useful 5V (typ.) alarm output if the inverter detects a CCFL open condition in the LCD display systems. The RoHS-compliant LS6D0812A-RH LCD backlight driver provides an input of 12V DC and an output current of 3 mArns to 6mArms per lamp. The device’s CCFL driving circuit includes a self-oscillating DC/AC converter, known as a Royer circuit, which minimizes EMI compared to other control methods. Total device power output is 3.5W per lamp, or 7W total. Physically, the LS6D0812A-RH measures 6.02" (153 mm) x 0.85" (21.5 mm) x 0.39" (10 mm). Other (typ.) specifications include 1,500 Vrms start-up voltage, 1A maximum input current and wide operating and storage temperature ranges of -20°C to +70°C and -30°C to +85°C, respectively.
