G.fast, an alternative to DOCSIS for telephone companies looking to provide the internet speeds that fiber companies are starting to provide to customers, is inching closer to certification standards and deployment. This week at the Broadband World Forum in London, a couple of developments in G.fast were announced.
First, the Broadband Forum announced that the University of New Hampshire-InterOperability Laboratory has become the Broadband Forum’s first and only laboratory for G.fast certification. UNH-IOL is helping prepare Broadband Forum members get prepared for the G.fast certification launch in 2016, and is showcasing a 4K Ultra HD TV running on G.fast at the Broadband World Forum.
And second, the Broadband Forum announced its new Broadband 20/20 vision for the future, which heavily includes G.fast.
“The Broadband 20/20 vision recognizes that interoperability will be key to the new world of communications,” said Tom Starr, Broadband Forum President and Lead Member of Technical Staff at AT&T, in a statement. “It is a core part of the Forum’s work and strategy and so the Interoperability Pavilion is the perfect place to discuss and showcase both the vision and the emerging technologies such as G.fast.”
