Verizon is one large step closer to approval to provide FiOS service in Washington, D.C.
With assent from the mayor of D.C. and the D.C. Council, Verizon could begin rolling out FiOS in the district early next year.
Verizon has just secured a go-ahead from the D.C. Office of Cable Television. After the agreement with that office is vetted, it will be forwarded to the mayor.
Thus far, FiOS has been introduced largely in suburban areas; D.C. will be one of the first urban implementations, along with New York City, which also recently approved a rollout (story here).
In Washington, Verizon will be competing with Comcast; in New York City, with Time Warner Cable and Cablevision.
