Single fibre splicer designed for installation in small narrow spaces

Fujikura Europe has launched the world’s smallest single fibre fusion splicer, the 12S, to the international market. At just 121mm wide, 162mm deep and 57mm high it is the most portable and ergonomic device ever developed. The 12S is the latest addition to the fusion splicer range of products from Fujikura.

Nanotubes on a chip simplify optical power measurements

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has demonstrated a novel chip-scale instrument made of carbon nanotubes that may simplify absolute measurements of laser power, especially the light signals transmitted by optical fibers in telecommunications networks.

Self-assembling silica microwires

By carefully controlling the shape of water droplets with an ultraviolet laser, researchers have found a way to coax silica nanoparticles to self-assemble into much more highly uniform silica wires. These hair-like slivers of silica could enable applications and technology not currently possible with comparatively bulky optical fiber.
