Controller ICs Allow Two-Touch Gestures

Ecnmag.com - November 03, 2008

Atmel AT42QT5320Targeting personal electronics and mobile phones, Atmel’s AT42QT5320 and AT42QT5480 capacitive touchscreen controller ICs track and report 1 or 2 simultaneous touches as separate X and Y positions. The RoHS-compliant components implement common user-initiated gestures, including tap, double tap, flick, and drag, as well as two-touch gestures, such as zoom in, zoom out, and rotate. The units’ 2-wire I²C-compatible interface lets the engineer implement the touch surface as a combination of touch keys and scrolling devices. The 5 mm² BGA-packaged AT42QT5320 and 5 mm² QFN-packaged AT42QT5480 support screen sizes of up to 8” with an aspect ratio of 16:9. Single touch options for the devices are available with a single-layer sensor and support for screen sizes up to 4.3” with aspect ratios of 16:9 or 4:3. Options for the single-touch AT42QT5480 include 7 mm² QFN and 10 mm² TQFP packaging, and support for up to 4 user-controlled GPOs.
