Xecom’s XE232NETserial to Ethernet module allows embedded systems designers to connect microcontroller-based systems to a local area network. It connects directly to the microcontroller’s serial port and provides a 10Base-T Ethernet connection at a cost of under $20 in 1,000-piece quantities. The XE232NET shares a common pin configuration with the Xecom XE5690SM modem family. XE232NET control and configuration uses AT commands like those used on modem modules. This consistency in hardware and software permits a single design to offer Ethernet and/or modem communications. The module is available with or without the isolation transformer and includes the 10Base-T MAC and PHY. It fits many types of embedded applications including security panels, home systems management, HVAC controls, point of sale terminals, and medical monitoring equipment.
