AOL site Going.com to shut down
Going.com, an AOL Inc.-owned local events website, is on its way out.
In a Monday notice to site visitors, Going co-founder Roy Rodenstein and the Going staff said it is "going away" Sunday, May 1 "as part of AOL's refocusing." Upon closing, Going.com will move to two other AOL properties: Moviefone, a movie site, and Patch, which runs community news sites.
AOL bought Going.com and Patch in 2009 for less than $10 million apiece, hoping to increase its reach in the local Web content market. Patch operates more than 500 local news sites, but AOL has also been focused increasingly on the market for news: It paid $315 million to buy news hub Huffington Post in March, betting this will increase its online advertising revenue.
