Like other tall structures, wind turbines use flashing lights to warn low-flying aircraft and prevent accidents. But citizens in Lower Saxony and Baden-Württemberg, Germany are complaining about the flashing red lights as an annoyance. In addition, the lights attract birds.

Fraunhofer Institute for High Frequency Physics and Radar Techniques FHR together with the commercial firm Industrial Electronics and the wind farm engineering firm Dirkshof Wind GmbH are working on a solution named “Parasol.”
The passive devices utilize local radio station frequencies to locate airplanes, and the lights only switch on when necessary.
