Carlos Lopez, a master's student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University, has received the NASA Harriett G. Jenkins Graduate Fellowship.

Lopez will continue working on thermal aspects (such as safety and thermal management) of litiium-ion batteries as part of
this award in collaboration with NASA Johnson Space Center.

Lopez is working with Dr. Partha Mukherjee, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Mukherjee initiated the collaboration with the NASA battery group head Dr. Judy Jeevarajan at JSC earlier this year, which led to this opportunity.

The NASA Harriett G. Jenkins Graduate Fellowship Program is funded by NASA's Office of Education Minority University Research and Education Project. Lopez's award is funded for one year and is eligible for renewal twice, provided all program requirements are met. The fellowship package includes $10,000 tuition offset, a stipend of $22,000 for master's study, and an $8,000 stipend for a mandatory 10-week Summer 2014 research experience to be conducted at NASA JSC.
