TOKYO, Feb. 25 (Kyodo) — KDDI Corp., the operator of "au" mobile phone services, said Monday it is considering introducing smartphones running Mozilla Corp.'s Firefox operating system in 2014.

KDDI has so far been offering models loaded with operating systems of Apple Inc. and Google Inc.

The Firefox OS is an open-source platform that allows mobile phone vendors to modify it free of charge. KDDI plans to strengthen security and other functions.

U.S.-based Mozilla said the new OS is under review by 17 operators worldwide including KDDI, with hardware set to be manufactured by companies such as LG Electronics Inc. of South Korea and ZTE Corp. of China.
