HiWave’s HiAM-SS2S SoundSleeve reference platform, a tablet PC case with built-in stereo speaker, has been adopted and customised by Nordic Enterprise’s ‘onanoff ‘ for its Sound Cover iPad case.

Launched in February 2012, ‘onanoff’s Sound Cover uses HiWave’s SoundSleeve excited panel concept to boost the iPad 2 and iPad 3′s volume by 300%. Sound from the normal iPad can be up to 87dB – Sound Cover boosts it to 101+14dB. It also significantly expands the iPad’s audio frequency range from 400Hz-6kHz to 150Hz-15kHz.

The simplicity of the HiWave SoundSleeve concept enabled ‘onanoff’ to develop the concept and to take the Sound Cover to market in less than a year. ‘onanoff’ customised the lightweight honeycomb aluminium panel with a pair of HiWave’s 2Watt low profile audio exciters (HiAX25C02-8/LP), adding a leather cover and aluminium kickstand to create the eye-catching and functional design, available in black, red or blue.

The Sound Cover connects to the iPad via a 3.5mm jack and uses a 1600mAh Li-ion battery to deliver 9 hours of playback from a single charge. A wireless Bluetooth model is also currently in development.

HiWave’s James Lewis commented: “onanoff’s Sound Cover is the first publicly announced adoption of HiWave’s SoundSleeve reference design. It is a great example of what can be achieved rapidly and inexpensively using our reference platforms and is a stunning piece of consumer electronics design.”

Petur Hannes Olafsson, Managing Director at Nordic Enterprises, said: “3 million iPad 3s were sold in the first three days of it coming onto the market and one of the key selling points is its slim, lightweight form factor that lets you watch movies on the go. But this form factor also limits the audio output. The Sound Cover(TM) keeps the portability and significantly improves the consumer experience when watching a film on the iPad.”
