IBM Corp. said Wednesday that it has bought Emptoris Inc. to build its "smarter commerce" business, which helps companies manage and analyze supplies and spending. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Emptoris' tools help companies manage supply chains and purchasing.

The deal is the latest in a series by technology companies of cloud-based software, which is delivered over an Internet connection rather than by being installed on individual computers.

Shares of IBM, which is based in Armonk, N.Y., rose $1.60 to $194.21 in midday trading.
