A union organizing group says IBM Corp. has laid off roughly 1,100 workers in North America this week.

Employees informed Alliance(at)IBM that the cuts have been made across business segments in the U.S. and some parts of Canada. Alliance(at)IBM is not a recognized union but has been trying to organize employees.

IBM did not immediately respond to phone calls for comment.

IBM is the world's largest computer-services provider and is based in Armonk, N.Y. Regulatory filings show that the company employed 433,362 worldwide as of Dec. 31.

IBM shares added 66 cents, to $198.19, in late afternoon trading.
