Chinese Web portal Sohu.com Inc. says its latest quarterly profit rose 17 percent on strong online advertising and games revenue.

Sohu said Monday it earned $45 million, or $1.17 per share, in the three months ending Sept. 30. It said revenues rose 42 percent over a year ago to $233 million, beating expectations.

Sohu operates the Sogou search engine and a video service and has a noncontrolling interest in online games company Changyou.
