Data storage company NetApp Inc. said Wednesday it has agreed to buy privately held rival Bycast Inc.

NetApp says the acquisition will extend its expertise in the area of so-called object-based storage software, which uses a method of storing digital information that makes it easier to find.

The company did not say how much it is paying for Bycast, which is based in Vancouver, British Columbia.
